What to include on a handyman invoice
State your minimum charge
A one-hour or two-hour minimum keeps short trips worth your drive. Show it as its own line so customers understand why a 20-minute fix wasn't billed as 20 minutes.
List each task
A short line per job, such as 'rehang closet door', reads much better than 'misc. repairs'. It also helps you remember what you did if the customer calls back.
Separate materials from labor
Include hardware store runs with receipts or a materials total. Some handymen add a modest markup; if you do, apply it consistently.
Know your state's job-size limits
Several states let unlicensed handymen take jobs only under a dollar threshold. If you hold a license, put the number on the invoice; if not, keep jobs within the allowed limit.

Handyman invoice FAQ
Does a handyman need a license to send invoices?
Anyone can send an invoice, but whether you can legally do the work depends on your state. Many states cap the dollar value of jobs an unlicensed handyman can take on, and electrical or plumbing tasks usually need a licensed trade. Check your state contractor board.
Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?
Hourly works well for mixed task lists and unknowns, while per-job pricing suits repeatable tasks like mounting a TV. Many handymen combine both: flat rates for common jobs and hourly for everything else. The invoice should mirror whatever you quoted.
Can I add a trip charge to a handyman invoice?
Yes, a trip or minimum charge is common, especially for customers outside your usual service area. Disclose it when booking so it doesn't feel hidden. List it as a separate line on the invoice.
